Rhodiola (Rhodiola rosea) also known as rose root or golden root has an incredible history as an adaptogenic herb. It was used by Chinese emperors and Greek philosophers alike, and was even revered by the Mongolians for its abilities to heal both cancer and tuberculosis. Tibetans used rhodiola as a sacred herb, and Ayurvedic medicine refers to the herb’s outstanding qualities to soothe the nervous system. There are numerous varieties of Rhodiola, however, Rhodiola rosea is most commonly used as a supplement. It grows in extremely cold, rocky, high-altitude climates such as in Siberia, Russia, Northern Canada, parts of Europe, and the Himalayas.

Salidroside (Sa), one of the major biologically active compounds extracted from this medicinal plant, works against oxidative stressor hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) and glutamate (GLU)-induced cell apoptosis in a human cortical cell line (HCN 1-A) maintained in culture.

Suggested Dosage

Rhodiola is a plant which can provide obvious, strong changes in the physiology. It is best to start with 100 mgs and slowly increase up to 400 mgs daily depending upon one’s constitution.

Side Effects of Rhodiola

Side effects of any type are unusual and mild, as Rhodiola has been used as both a food and herbal supplement for thousands of years. It is considered to be a safe, non-addictive herb; however, side effects can include anxiety, agitation, nausea, hypersalivation, or dry mouth, restlessness, and insomnia.  These side effects are essentially those that result when ingesting any mild stimulant.
