L-Theanine

THEANINE (L-theanine)

In 2737, it is said that a Chinese emperor was sitting beneath a tree drinking some boiled water when the wind blew some leaves into his cup.  It is from this time that tea was discovered as a delicious beverage, and medicinal, herbal remedy for a host of ailments. Theanine, also known as L-theanine, compounds found primarily in both green and black teas have been used throughout time. Though many teas contain caffeine which can be stimulating, Theanine induces a calming effect in the body.  These plant compounds provide “alert calmness” which is akin to a good session of meditation. Theanine alters levels of various neurotransmitters, making this state of mind possible.

Benefits of THEANINE

Theanine offer many benefits:

How Does THEANINE Work?

The primary active compounds in green and black tea derived Theanine are amino acids which block the binding of L-glutamic acid to glutamate receptors in the brain. This causes an anti-stress effect by inhibiting cortical neuron excitation.

In addition to blocking excitatory stimuli at glutamate receptors in the brain, L-theanine also stimulates production of the inhibitory, relaxing neurotransmitter GABA, adding to its anti-anxiety effects, and providing calm to those who ingest it.

Suggested Dosage

The suggested dosage is typically 250-400mg daily to positively affect both sleep and anxiety. A larger dose may be required for schizophrenia and other considerations.

Side Effects of THEANINE

Side effects of any kind are usually mild and infrequent. The only reported complications are headaches, dizziness, and infrequently, GI complications.
